An East Side man wanted in a fatal double shooting outside of a business that killed a man and critically wounded another has surrendered to Columbus police.
Michael Rashawn Wells, 32, surrendered to Columbus police at their headquarters on Oct. 9, police said in a media release. Wells faces charges of murder and felonious assault in the fatal shooting of 39-year-old Jeffrey Amaker and the wounding of one of Amaker's relatives following a fight that happened on the city's East Side.
Officers responded at 2:14 a.m. Oct. 4 to the Prime Ultra Lounge on the 900 block of Barnett Road on a report of a shooting and found Amaker and a relative suffering from gunshot wounds. Both were taken to a hospital in critical condition. Amaker died at 2:47 a.m.,
police said.
Police said Amaker, his relative and Wells had been involved in a fight in the parking lot before the shooting. According to a criminal complaint filed by Columbus homicide detectives, witnesses saw Wells retrieve a gun from his car and shoot the two men before fleeing in a 2007 Toyota Avalon. Police recovered the car on Oct. 5.
Wells evaded arrest for several days before surrendering to police. As of Oct. 9, a court date had not been set. He is currently in custody at the Franklin County Corrections Center.
