Two central Ohio crashes led to fatalities on Sept. 6. A fiery crash in Fairfield County left a 23-year-old dead and another injured, and an animal encounter in a Columbus roadway caused a motorcycle driver to lose control and fatally strike a utility pole.
A Columbus driver traveling on U.S. 33 eastbound at about 6:15 p.m. Sept. 6 drove into oncoming traffic while attempting to overcorrect the vehicle after swerving to the right.
The car, a 2016 GMC Terrain operated by 33-year-old Alvaro Uriber, flipped over into the U.S. 33 westbound lanes near U.S. 22 in Hocking Township, hitting a 2025 Chevrolet Trax and causing both cars to catch on fire, according to a press release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol.
The Caledonian driver of the Trax, 23-year-old
Cameron M. Lyon, was transported to the hospital, where he died. A passenger of the same car, 23-year-old Abrielle Kerns of Lancaster, was transported to the hospital with non-critical injuries and survived.
No information about the condition of Uriber was provided. The crash is still under investigation.
A motorcycle lost control while avoiding an animal in Columbus
At about 1:55 p.m. Sept. 6, 42-year-old Frederick Hunter swerved to avoid hitting an animal while traveling northbound on Wilton Drive near Dundee Avenue, causing him to lose control of the vehicle and hit a utility pole.
Frederick was transported to the hospital and pronounced dead at 2:37 p.m., according to a press release from the Columbus Division of Police.
The kind of animal Frederick was avoiding isn't known. The crash is still under investigation.
