A crash report shows the driver of a car that struck a U.S. Representative's vehicle fled the scene and has not yet been identified.
U.S. Rep. Marcy Kaptur, a Toledo Democrat, suffered serious but non-life
threatening injuries in the Aug. 2 crash in Lucas County, her office said.
The 80-year-old Kaptur was the passenger in a Ford Bronco that was struck by a Nissan Altima that had crossed the center line, according to a crash report prepared by Toledo police.
The crash report said the Altima was headed south on North Detroit Avenue around 10:45 a.m. when for an unknown reason, the driver lost control and skidded. The Altima then crossed the center line and struck the Bronco, which was headed north on North Detroit Avenue.
The driver of the Altima ran from the scene, the crash report said. It was raining at the time of the crash.
Kaptur was wearing her seat belt and was taken to Mercy Health St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo.
Kegan Zimmerman, Kaptur's 26-year-old campaign manager, was driving the Bronco. Zimmerman was also hurt but had non-life threatening injuries.
According to the crash report, the owner of the Nissan Altima has been identified but it is unclear if the driver has any connection to that person.
Kaptur was going to a church service at the time of the crash, according to her office. Kaptur is the longest-serving congresswoman in history and is currently running for reelection.
