Columbus police have identified a man riding an electric bicycle who died after being struck by a pickup truck in the University District.
William Brewer, 58, of Columbus, was riding an electric bike just before 2:30 p.m. Aug. 13, traveling northbound on Summit Street approaching 18th Avenue in the bike lane, according to a media release from the Columbus police Accident Investigation Unit. At the same time, a Ford E-250 pickup truck driven by Brian Holbrook, 45, was traveling eastbound on East 18th Avenue when police said Holbrook failed to yield for a stop sign and tried to turn southbound on Summit Street.
Holbrook did not see Brewer and struck him as he was traveling northbound, police said. Brewer was ejected from the e-bike. He was transported
to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center, Downtown, in what was originally reported as stable condition.
However, Brewer's condition deteriorated to critical and he later died from his injuries, police said.
Holbrook was cited for failing to yield to the stop sign, according to a Columbus police crash report.
The Columbus police Accident Investigation Unit continues to investigate the collision. Anyone with information regarding the crash is asked to contact police at 614-645-4767.
