During atargeted enforcement operation along Interstate 270, law enforcement agencies issued close to 1,000 speeding citations and cited more than a dozen motorists for speeds in excess of 100 mph, according to data from the Franklin County Sheriff's Office.
The operation was joined by the sheriff's office, the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the Ohio Department of Transportation, and Columbus, Dublin, and Gahanna police, the sheriff's office said. The operation ran from July 19 to July 25 and was meant to target speeding and reckless driving along I-270.
There was a total of 961 citations issued during the operation. In addition to speeding tickets, the agencies involved in the operation issued:
- 19 citations for speeds over 100 mph
- 84 seat belt citations
- 121 distracted driving citations
There were also two arrests made for impaired driving,
according to the sheriff's office.
"We want to thank all the deputies who participated in this operation, along with out Communications Center dispatchers who had an increase in calls, and our records technicians for an increased workload during this blitz," the sheriff's office said.
According to data from the Patrol, there have been 531 fatal crashes in Franklin County between 2021 and 2025. The patrol said Franklin County had the highest number of fatal crashes out of all counties in the state during that time. From Jan. 1 through July 9, there have been 786 crashes on I-270, with 144 of them being caused by unsafe speeds, according to patrol data.
After Franklin County, Cuyahoga County had 490 fatal crashes between 2021 and 2025, followed by Hamilton and Montgomery counties, with 325 and 295 crashes, respectively.
