Former Olentangy High School quarterback Ethan Grunkemeyer is set to become Virginia Tech's starting quarterback, according to multiple reports.
Grunkemeyer transferred to Virginia Tech after starting seven games for Penn State in the 2025 season. He took the Penn State starting job after quarterback Drew Allar was ruled out for the remainder of the 2025 season with a broken ankle after an upset loss to Northwestern on Oct. 11.
In 11 games, Grunkemeyer finished with 1,339 passing yards, eight touchdowns and four interceptions.
Grunkemeyer followed coach James Franklin to Virginia Tech. Franklin was fired by Penn State after a 3-3 start to 2025 the season. Virginia Tech hired him on Nov. 17.
Grunkemeyer faced Ohio State in his second collegiate start.
He passed for 145 yards and threw an interception in a 38-14 loss on Nov. 1.
A Lewis Center native, Grunkemeyer completed 66.3% of his passes for 3,517 yards and 39 touchdowns with eight interceptions at Olentangy during his senior season. He was a three-year starter and a team captain his senior year for the Braves.
