A Dublin Scioto High School student was detained Oct. 21 after Dublin police officers and school staff found a handgun in the student's possession, according to a message sent to parents.
At the end of the school day, students reported to the Dublin police school resource officer that a student had displayed a gun. School administrators and Dublin police officers immediately responded, located the student, conducted a search and recovered a handgun, according to Dublin City Schools.
No students or staff were harmed during the incident and the school day ended with normal dismissal procedures. The district planned to increase security at Dublin Scioto on Oct. 22 as a precautionary measure "to reassure students, staff and families," according to the district's
message.
"Today, students trusted the adults in their school enough to speak up when something wasn't right, and those adults acted immediately," Superintendent Dr. Jen Schwanke said in a prepared statement. "That trust is built through the relationships our educators, administrators and school resource officers develop with students every day. I am grateful to the students who came forward and to everyone whose swift response helped keep our school community safe."
Consequences for the student found with the handgun will be assessed in accordance with the district's Board of Education policies, the district said. The gender or age of the student were not released by the district.
Dublin police could not immediately be reached to learn what juvenile criminal charges the youth will face.
