Ohio launched a new hotline to help seniors who are targeted by romance scams.
Ohioans can call 1-855-961-SCAM (7226) if they or a loved one have been victimized. Scammers establish fake online relationships − typically with older adults − with the goal of stealing the victims' money, according to Ohio Attorney General Andy Wilson's office.
"No Ohioan should lose his or her life savings to someone pretending to care about them," Wilson said. "These scammers are sophisticated, emotionally manipulative and, sadly, increasingly common."
The hotline is part of a new initiative by Wilson's office to crack down on romance scams. The launch date came weeks after federal officials revealed an alleged $15 million scheme during a news conference in Columbus.
Here are potential signs to watch for, according to Wilson's office:
- You or your loved one met the person online or by phone.
- The person claims to live or work overseas.
- The person pretends to be successful and displays a vested interest in your life.
- The person says they need your money to resolve a dilemma or crisis.
Wilson's office urges Ohioans do to their research and be skeptical of any requests for money.
