SUNBURY – Wellington junior Will Myers battled the best Division III boys golfers in the state, and he can’t wait to do it again next fall.
Myers finished with a two-day score of 2-over-par 146 in the state
tournament at NorthStar, placing him sixth behind champion Matia Kastner (138) of Cincinnati Seven Hills.
“I showed what I can do against the state, and I know I can do better next year,” Myers said. “I can place higher and probably win next year.”
Myers shot a 1-under 71 in the opening round Oct. 12, putting him in a five-way tie for first heading into the final round Oct. 13.
He didn’t fare as well the second day, shooting a 75, but he still earned second-team all-state honors.
“Putts were falling yesterday. I was making everything I looked at,” Myers said. “Today, I just couldn’t get them to fall like I did yesterday. Yesterday was just a great putting day. ... I was misreading putts today. I wasn’t as aggressive as I was yesterday.”
Assistant coach Kyle Yant was pleased with Myers’ performance.
“He did great,” Yant said. “Maybe he didn't start the way he wanted to today, but like the fighter he is, he finished strong, especially finishing with par on [the par-4 No. 18] ... because 18 was playing hard all week.”
Competing in its first state tournament since 2019, Wellington finished sixth (655) behind Toledo Ottawa Hills (586), Pettisville (628), Ottoville (628), Berlin Hiland (630) and Kalida (635) and ahead of Seven Hills (672), Ironton St. Joseph Central (674), Jeromesville Hillsdale (686), New Paris National Trail (694), Mogadore (700) and Independence (702) from suburban Cleveland.
Myers was thrilled to be a part of the Jaguars team that made it back to state.
“It means a lot,” he said. “We have a great group of guys. We all love each other. There’s no beef within the group, and the whole school was backing us coming into this week. The whole community was supporting us, so that felt great.”
Solomon Graham (tied for 34th, 164), Ari Kirsner (tied for 48th, 172), Brayden Weaver (tied for 50th, 173) and Griffin Martin (tied for 67th, 189) also competed for Wellington. All four are seniors.
Grove City Christian junior Alex Edwards tied for 39th (167).
