The Athletic first reported the transfer July 31, which the Dispatch has confirmed.
Middlesbrough will pay a $7.5 million transfer fee plus add-ons, and Arfsten will travel to England soon to complete the move. Arfsten, who played for the U.S. in the World Cup, will join former Crew midfielder Aidan Morris and former Crew academy product Sebastian Berhalter with Middlesbrough.
