Columbus broke the Aug. 20 rain record this year, with 2.87 inches on the day. Previously, the rainiest Aug. 20 was in 2007, when the city saw 2.37 inches.
Additionally, this month has been the second rainiest August on record in Columbus with a total of 9.91 inches so far, and the second wettest start to any month in the city's history, according to the National Weather Service.
This month has also been the sixth wettest month on record in Columbus, after 11 days of consecutive rain and storms swept through central Ohio the last couple weeks, leading to widespread flooding and damage.
The Franklinton floodwalls were activated the morning of Aug. 20 as the Scioto River got closer to cresting.
The National Weather Service predicts that the South
Fork Licking River will reach a record high of 883.5 feet at about 6 a.m. Aug. 21.
