The two-story penthouse atop the historic LeVeque Tower in downtown Columbus has sold for $608,999.
The nearly 2,100-square-foot condominium, with two bedrooms, two-and-a-half bathrooms and panoramic views of the city and Scioto River, was recently listed in an auction that closed at 7 p.m. Aug. 6. Bidding opened at $580,000, and the property received 21 number of bids before the winning bid of $608,999 secured the penthouse.
Mandy Reeves, an auctioneer and Realtor with Auction Ohio, previously told The Dispatch that the identity of bidders would not be disclosed.
"I've lived in Columbus my entire life, and [I've gone] Downtown and [seen] the LeVeque Tower and the mystique and the landmark that it is," Reeves said at the time. "So to see an opportunity
where you could actually own the penthouse in the center of central Ohio makes it a pretty exciting opportunity."
The 47-story LeVeque Tower, located at 50 W. Broad St., stands more than 555 feet tall and was the fifth-tallest building in the world at the time it was built. It remained Columbus' tallest building until the nearby Rhodes State Office Tower was built in 1974.
Built by famed architect C. Howard Crane, the Art Deco-style building now houses Hotel LeVeque, a 149-room boutique hotel, plus a restaurant, bar, office space and what Reeves estimated to be 40 to 50 residential units.
The condo that just sold is one of three penthouses in the building and faces west toward the Scioto River. It was extensively renovated in 2017 and bought by its most recent previous owner in 2022 through a traditional sale. The penthouse also includes access to the hotel's fitness facility and swimming pool, plus two parking spaces within a garage behind the building.
Reeves worked alongside Cindy McCain of Keller Williams Classic Properties Realty to market the property.
Downtown's luxury condo market is a strong one, with Reeves saying 47 units sold for more than $750,000 in the past 12 months. That's part of the reason she opted for an auction instead of a traditional sale – it helps the property stand out.
"That's a pretty big market, bigger than I even realized it was," she said. "You can buy a luxury condo in Columbus, Ohio, but the rarity of this landmark building is what's really special about this particular unit."
