Former Ohio State coach Urban Meyer did not mince his words when he described the current state of Michigan football, despite his friendship with the Wolverines head coach.
"I don't see a fast solution at all because it's – I have not said this yet – it's a train wreck right now. I stood right there and watched it," Meyer said.
After a win over Western Michigan that came down to a controversial, last-second finish and a loss to Iowa, the Wolverines' season hit another bump when they fell 20-14 to Minnesota Oct. 3 as six-point favorites. Michigan is 3-2. It is 0-2 in Big Ten play for the third time in 60 seasons and for the first time since 2014.
Against Minnesota, Michigan quarterback Bryce Underwood completed 10 of 21 passes for 101 yards and
threw two interceptions.
Wolverines coach Kyle Whittingham, formerly Meyer's defensive coordinator at Utah and later the head coach of the Utes for 21 seasons, was asked whether changes were coming to the offense. He replied that he would use the entire staff's input and that the current results were "unacceptable."
"What in the heck is going on?" said Meyer. " ... I did not feel it. I did not see it. They had three turnovers right in front of me. You can blame Bryce Underwood all you want, [but] I don't see any explosiveness on offense. I see a quarterback getting hammered. ... First of all, they're 2-3; their record is not 3-2. They lost to Western Michigan. So the answer is yes, the change has now been forced upon them."
The Wolverines have four teams on their upcoming schedule ranked in the top 25 of the US LBM Coaches poll, including Ohio State.
Underwood, the top prospect in the 2025 high school recruiting class, has 881 passing yards with five touchdowns and four interceptions. Sitting behind him is Tommy Carr, a four-star recruit in the 2026 class from Saline, Michigan.
