Homicide detectives are investigating after a Columbus man walked into a hospital suffering from a gunshot wound and later died after being transferred to another hospital with trauma care.
Columbus police responded at around 1:42 a.m. Sept. 3 to a report of a victim from a Columbus shooting who had walked into Mount Carmel St. Ann's Hospital in Westerville. On arrival, officers encountered Thai Del Rey Hiatt, 19, of Columbus' Far West Side, who was suffering from at least one gunshot wound, police said.
Due to Hiatt's critical injuries, he was transported from Mount Carmel St. Ann's, which provides emergency medical care but does not have a trauma care designation, to Mount Carmel East Hospital on Columbus' Far East Side, which is a Level II
trauma center. Despite the efforts of doctors and medical personnel there, Hiatt was pronounced dead a short time later, police said.
Detectives said the shooting happened in the area of Karl and Red Robin roads on Columbus' Northeast Side, east of Interstate 71 and north of Morse Road. They have not found a motive or publicly identified a suspect.
