A pedestrian died shortly after midnight Sept. 24 after being struck while crossing a road on Columbus' Southeast Side, police said.
Elijah Tompkins, 26, attempted to cross South Hamilton Road near Blakestone Lane at about 11:30 p.m. Sept. 23 when Columbus police said a Chevrolet Silverado southbound on South Hamilton Road hit him.
Police said Tompkins crossed against a "don't walk" signal and South Hamilton Road had a green light. Drivers on eastbound Blakestone Lane were stopped at a red light when the crash happened and described the crash to police, according to the news release.
Medics transported Tompkins to Mount Carmel East hospital in critical condition, and he died at 12:13 a.m.
The driver of the Chevrolet, an adult, remained at the scene
until police arrived.
The Columbus police Accident Investigation Unit is investigating the crash.
