Columbus has 20 points after 19 MLS games, putting them three points ahead of Montreal. The Crew are knotted with Toronto FC (4-7-8) for 11th in the East. That's two spots and four points behind D.C. United (5-5-9, 24 points), which holds the conference's final postseason ticket in ninth.
D.C. United hosts New England on Aug. 19, while Toronto travels to Charlotte FC.
Facing Montreal has a personal connection for Crew interim head coach Laurent Courtois, who spent 14 months there as head coach before his dismissal March 24, 2025, amid an
0-4-1 start. Winning would be sweet, but getting the Crew back on track in MLS play after a 3-1 loss Aug. 15 in Charlotte is the main goal.
"Yeah, of course it means something [to me], but it's a good team," Courtois said Aug. 17 at OhioHealth Performance Center. "They actually play really well, and they're tough to break down, but ... every team has their flaws. We'll do our best, but the guys want to play back [at] home and make things right."
