Some of Miami University's top leaders and a coach are the school's highest paid employees, public records obtained by The Dispatch show.
Miami Football Coach Chuck Martin was the highest paid employee at the public university in 2025, making more than $1.14 million. University President Gregory Crawford was the second-highest paid employee last year, bringing in $581,335, according to payroll records.
Martin earned the most with his team finishing 7-7 last year, while Basketball Coach Travis Steele earned $331,225 leading the university to an undefeated regular season and a victory in the NCAA tournament. Steele did receive a contract extension and large pay increase after the season ended in March.
The Dispatch submitted a public records request
to Miami University in May for its payroll, including a breakdown of employee earnings, such as overtime, bonuses and more. But even as other local governments and colleges have fulfilled such records requests by this news organization, the public university refused to provide granular data, claiming a record containing everything The Dispatch asked for did not exist. Instead, the university provided only gross pay for each employee.
Miami University is located in Oxford, Ohio, about a two hour drive southwest of Columbus. More than 22,000 students are enrolled, according to the university.
