A Newark man who was killed in a two-vehicle crash in western Franklin County was not wearing his seatbelt when he ran a redlight and hit a semitrailer, according to a crash report from the Franklin County Sheriff's Office.
Balin Derringer, 22, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which happened just before 7 a.m. July 28 at U.S. 40 and Alton Darby Creek Road, according to the sheriff's office.
According to the crash report, Derringer was driving a Ford Mustang west on U.S. 40 while a FedEx tractor-trailer was traveling east on U.S. 40 and preparing to turn north onto Alton Darby Creek Road. Derringer ran a red light and hit the tractor-trailer on its passenger side, according to the report.
After hitting the tractor-trailer, Derringer's
Mustang came to a rest on the north side of U.S. 40, and he was thrown from the vehicle. Prairie Township medics arrived and pronounced him dead at 7:05 a.m., according to the sheriff's office. Medics took the tractor-trailer driver to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center with unspecified injuries.
The crash report states that Derringer was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash.
An Ohio Department of Transportation traffic camera showed the FedEx tractor-trailer blocking both sides of the road for the rest of the morning and into the early afternoon. The roadway reopened about 1:30 p.m.
