After defeating Atlas FC, the Crew look to continue their strong start in the 2026 Leagues Cup against CF Pachuca on Aug. 7.
Pachuca, which finished fourth in Liga MX last season, is a familiar foe for the Crew. During the 2024 Concacaf Champions Cup final, the Crew fell to Pachuca 3-0 while players and coaches battled a suspected case of food poisoning
. They started feeling symptoms the day before the match.“We had a team meal at the hotel that we stayed at, and I thought I had a really good meal,” defender Malte Amundsen said Aug. 6. “But it turned out the day after that, some of us didn’t feel as good.”
The Crew will get a chance at redemption in their second Phase One match, currently sitting third in the standings among MLS teams after a 3-1
win over Atlas and a +2 goal differential, a crucial tiebreaker to advance to the knockout stages of the tournament.
Despite starting many bench players against Atlas, the Crew jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first half with goals from Cesar Ruvalcaba and Sean Zawadski. Brais Mendez, who salvaged a point for the Crew with a free-kick goal in his first appearance against Inter Miami, entered in the second half and scored the third goal of the match in the 51st minute.
The Crew will advance in the Leagues Cup if they rank in the top four of MLS clubs based on Phase One performance.
