Two people were wounded in a drive-by shooting at a funeral outside of a Baptist church Aug. 17 on Columbus' Northeast Side.
The shooting happened at around 12:30 p.m. outside the Antioch Jordan Baptist Church, located at 1825 Woodland Park Ave. in the Argyle Park neighborhood, Columbus police Sgt. James Fuqua said,
Two people were shot and transported to local hospitals, and they are expected to survive their injuries, Fuqua said. Several people, including children, were exiting the church while starting the funeral procession when multiple suspects in a dark-colored vehicle drove by and fired several shots into the crowd in front of the church, according to Fuqua.
The vehicle then fled the scene on Woodland Avenue, Fuqua said.
Additional information
about the two victims, including their genders and whether they were juveniles or adults, could not be immediately confirmed, said Fuqua.
"It's tragic and it's senseless," said Fuqua. He urged anyone with information on the shooting or suspects to contact Columbus police.
A police dispatcher said there was still a heavy police presence at the scene of the shooting as of 2:30 p.m.
"Our prayers are with all those impacted by this tragic act of violence," Anthony McSwain, the church's executive pastor, said in a statement posted on the church's Facebook page. McSwain also thanked Columbus police for their "swift response" to the shooting. The funeral being held at the time of the shooting wasn't affiliated with the church, according to their statement.
"Antioch Jordan Baptist Church is currently closed as Columbus police continue their investigation, and we are fully cooperating with law enforcement," McSwain said.
