Traffic camera footage showed wind lifting a vehicle from the roadway on Interstate 71 during severe storms Aug. 11.
Ohio Department of Transportation Press Secretary Matt Bruning posted footage of the incident to X. It shows heavy wind and rain on I-71 near Weber Road on Columbus' North Side at 10:08 a.m.
Debris flies past the traffic camera, and trees and powerlines shake. Then a vehicle traveling on the roadway overturns and spins.
On Aug. 12 or 13, surveyors with the National Weather Service will visit Columbus to determine whether a tornado passed through the city. Police and fire personnel responded to numerous reports of downed trees and powerlines Aug. 11, especially near Clintonville and the University District.
The damage reports are close
to the site on I-71 where the ODOT camera captured the overturned car.
A Clintonville brewery, Derive Brewing at 2808 N. High St, had its window blown out. An employee shared footage of the damage with the Columbus Dispatch. The brewery has temporarily closed to assess the damage.
At the John Glenn International Airport, 82 mph winds were recorded, the weather service said. The Ohio State University Airport registered 52 mph winds.
A tornado warning was issued in Madison County before 10 a.m. A weather service spokesperson said there were not clear signs of a tornado in Columbus on radar, so no tornado warning was issued.
