Cincinnati Bengals defensive end Shemar Stewart suffered a left leg injury during the first training camp practice on July 29 and was carted off the field to receive further medical evaluation.
Stewart is dealing with a hyperextend knee, head coach Zac Taylor said.
"He fortunately avoided major injury," Taylor said. "He hyperextended his knee, it will be several weeks. It's hard to pinpoint exactly how much of training camp that will be."
The injury took place on Stewart’s second rep of team drills. Stewart was lined up across from offensive lineman Cody Ford and got tangled up with him as he fell to the ground. Stewart immediately grabbed his left leg and was unable to put any weight on his leg as he left the field.
"Very fortunate, because it
obviously looked bad. The good news is we'll be getting him back sooner rather than later," Taylor said.
After a tumultuous start to his rookie season in 2025 due to a contract dispute with the club, Stewart was hoping to take advantage of a full training camp. Now, his preparation for the upcoming season will be altered again due to this injury.
Stewart played eight games for the Bengals in his rookie season and recorded one sack. He dealt with ankle and knee injuries last year and was never able to find his groove on the field.
The Bengals drafted Stewart with the No. 17 overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft out of Texas A&M.
