Benjamin Brown, a highly ranked member of the Class of 2029 who had an outstanding freshman season with the Scott High School boys basketball team, has reportedly transferred to Covington Catholic.
Will Jones of the media website 10thRegion.com, which covers Scott and the rest of Kentucky's 10th Region, reported this Aug. 3. Multiple social media accounts said Brown worked out with the Colonels earlier in the day, but the transfer has not been verified. CovCath head coach Jake Thelen did not return requests for comment.
If Brown has enrolled, as a transfer student the Kentucky High School Athletic Association will have to rule him eligible to play during the 2026-27 season.
Brown, a 6-foot-1 guard, was ranked as the second-best freshman basketball
player in the state of Nevada last year while attending high school in Las Vegas. According to 10thRegion.com, both of Brown’s parents graduated from Scott and the family moved from Las Vegas to Taylor Mill during the winter.
Brown averaged 22.8 points in 17 games with 39 3-pointers for Scott after becoming eligible in January. That included 50 points against Walton-Verona. Scott went 16-15 last year, 9-9 after Brown's arrival, and advanced to the regional semifinals. He scored the tying basket in the final seconds of a dramatic 65-62 win over Bishop Brossart in the 37th District semifinals.
The recruiting site Next Up Recruits reported in late June that Brown had transferred to Summit Country Day, which was Ohio Division V state semifinalists in 2026. But Jones reported Aug. 3 that he only played with Summit’s team during one weekend tournament and never enrolled there.
If Brown plays for CovCath, he would join rising senior Braeden Myrick, who averaged 17 points per game with 106 made 3-pointers last season, for a potent backcourt. CovCath went 31-3 and reached the first round of the Sweet 16 last season. The Colonels graduated four of their top five scorers, including Mr. Basketball finalist Athens McGillis, but return several others who played a lot of varsity minutes during the season.
