Former Cincinnati Bengals head coach Marvin Lewis shared a story on "Inside Football" that speaks to Bengals president and owner Mike Brown's humanity.
Lewis was told in 2017, while he was coaching the Bengals, that he had a blood clot.
"They thought I had a blood clot," Lewis said. "And and I know the concern everybody had for me until it was resolved that I did not have a blood clot. But me, I'm going to practice and Mike Brown comes over to me (and) says, 'Marvin, come here.' And I sit beside him in the golf cart. He says, 'Hey, you aren't just my coach. You're my friend.'"
"But that's the one thing I would say about Mike Brown," Lewis continued. "He wanted the player to live his life afterwards. He didn't give a s--- about next week. I did.
I wanted to play tomorrow. But he wanted the guy to have a productive life afterwards, maybe so they didn't come back at him. But still, that was the right thing."
Lewis added that his "biggest concern" with Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts' injury situation "was the fact that he was put on the plane to fly."
Lewis, the Bengals' head coach for 16 seasons from 2003 to 2018, won four AFC North titles with Cincinnati and was named Associated Press NFL Coach of the Year in 2009, but his postseason record with the Bengals was 0-7.
Lewis, the winningest head coach in Bengals history, had a regular-season record of 131-122-3 as the Bengals' head coach.
