Manny Gonzalez, the home plate umpire for the Cincinnati Reds' series opener against the San Diego Padres, reported dizziness and had to leave the game after receiving medical attention for heat exhaustion on the field during the top of the fifth inning.
National Baseball Hall of Famer Barry Larkin and Reds.TV analyst Barry Larkin said the incident brought back bad memories of umpire John McSherry suffering a fatal heart attack on the field on Opening Day in 1996.
"Scary stuff. Very hot and humid here today," Larkin said during the broadcast. "Very reluctant to speak about that. Any time you see anybody go down on the field, it's a terrible thing. But I was playing when John McSherry unfortunately lost his life on the actual field. It was a very
uncomfortable situation. Anytime you see that, it's where it takes me. Very scary."
"You just really hope that he is okay," Larkin said. "It is really hot down on that field. … You never like to see anybody go down. And it just brings back some awful memories for me, when I was on the field and John McSherry was behind home plate. He went down and never recovered. Scary stuff."
