When Cincinnati Reds National League Rookie of the Year favorite Sal Stewart hit his 31st home run of the season in the seventh inning of their series finale against the Cubs at Wrigley Field, Stewart celebrated with a tribute to New York Knicks guard Jalen Brunson as he rounded the bases.
It got the attention of celebrity Knicks fan Ben Stiller, who tweeted, "Love this."
After the game, when Stewart was asked during an on-field NBC interview about the celebration, he said he had told teammates he would "do the Brunson" when he homered.
During the broadcast, former Reds great Joey Votto, who served as an NBC analyst for the game, said he's been impressed with Stewart.
"He's had a special year," Votto said. "He's had a great start to his career.
And the sky is the limit as far as his talent level."
Votto did add that the Reds lack mentors for De La Cruz and Stewart.
Asked after the game what it was like playing the game with Votto nearby, Stewart replied, "He's such a great player. I watched him growing up. He's the epitome of a complete hitter. It was really cool. ... What a player. It was awesome. And I'm happy that we got the win."
Votto said after Stewart's on-field interview, "I love the reply. It's always about the team. To receive a compliment like that from him. ... I love the deflection and turning it into a team (thing). That's who you want to play side-by-side with."
"Sal Stewart ROY," Votto tweeted after the game.
