Where to drop off storm debris in Northern Kentucky

COVINGTON, KY − Northern Kentucky was walloped by storms Aug. 11 that left trees and debris on roadways, sidewalks and yards – and more bad weather is expected through Friday.

Flash flood watches and warnings have been issued throughout the Greater Cincinnati area as slow, but steady-moving storms pass through the region.

Meanwhile, cleanup efforts are underway as workers clear public areas.

But what can people do about all the debris in their yards and on sidewalks? It depends on where you live.

Covington

Mayor Ron Washington said on social media Aug. 12 that people who are able to drop off debris can do so at the

following locations:

• Austinburg Neighborhood Park at 15th Street and Eastern Avenue.
• The lower soccer field at the Bill Cappel Sports Complex in Latonia, 4305 Decoursey Ave.
• Parking lot at Hands Pike Park and Tripoli Lane, 1200 Hands Pike.
• Public works barn at Devou Park, located along Montague Road just west of the Behringer-Crawford Museum, 1625 Montague Road.

The sites will be available for a week, the city confirmed in an email.

Washington said people unable to remove debris from public spaces themselves can contact the city at [phone] for assistance.

"The city will remove debris from the sidewalk, from the curb for the public, but it may take up to a week to have the city public works crew do that," he said. 

Newport

In Newport, the city announced on social media that residents can place small tree limbs and brush along public sidewalk areas behind street curbs. It advised people to keep sidewalks as clear as possible and not to put debris in roadways. 

"Public Works continues cleanup from yesterday's storms, prioritizing downed trees and limbs blocking streets and sidewalks, debris on vehicles, and storm sewer inlets," the post said. "Cleanup efforts will continue throughout the week."

Kenton County

Kenton County residents can participate in a free monthly trash voucher program, which allows people to get rid of bulky items (including yard debris) free of charge at Bavarian Waste in Walton.

Vouchers are issued on a first-come, first-serve basis and only 200 are available each month.

After vouchers are approved, waste items can be taken to Bavarian Waste at 12764 McCoys Fork Road in Walton, Monday to Saturday.
