MILWAUKEE – Second baseman Matt McLain was a late scratch from the Cincinnati Reds’ lineup Saturday (Sept. 12) because of a sore left shoulder.
That’s the shoulder McLain injuredduring spring training 2024 that required surgery that cost him all of that season.
“I think it’s gonna be good, but it needs a day or two,” he said.
McLain said the shoulder started bothering him after diving for Luis Lara’s single in the fifth inning of Friday’s series opener against the Brewers. He felt it again in the eighth on an awkward play in the eighth.
“It happens on dives sometimes,” said McLain, who was able to hit in the cage pregame. “But I moved around today, and
I think we avoided anything serious.”
It was not considered serious enough to get imaging, and McLain said he “passed” the tests the medical staff conducted.
“The way they explained it, the shoulder’s OK,” manager Terry Francona said. “I think it’s more muscular. The last thing we want to do now is have him dive again and do something that we can’t let a couple days fix, or a day fix. We’ll monitor him (Saturday), see how he’s doing (Sunday) and go from there.”
