If your child has a Barbie, Hot Wheels or Crayola-themed toothpaste in the bathroom, it may be worth checking the label.
More than 4.7 million tubes of toothpaste have been recalled nationwide. The recall, initiated Sept. 10 by manufacturer Pritam International Private Limited, covers 17 toothpaste products distributed in the U.S. The FDA classified the action as a Class II recall on Oct. 19, meaning the products could pose a temporary or medically reversible health risk, and the chance of serious health problems is considered remote.
The recall remains ongoing. Here's what consumers should know about the recalled brands and products.
What toothpaste brands have been recalled?
According to the FDA, the recall includes multiple varieties of Brush Buddies kids toothpaste distributed nationwide,
including some character-themed and ice-cream flavors. Barbie, Hot Wheels and Crayola Brush Buddies account for more than 1.78 million tubes of the recalled toothpaste.
The recall also included two types of Evo products marketed for teeth whitening and sensitivity, and two Aru products marketed for gum health and cavity protection.
What the FDA says caused the recall
The FDA told USA TODAY via email on Thursday, Oct. 22, the reason for the recall is "deviations from current good manufacturing practice (CGMP) requirements."
According to the agency's website, the CGMP regulations for drugs contains "minimum requirements for the methods, facilities, and controls used in manufacturing, processing and packaging of a drug product." It also help ensure a product is safe for use and that it has the ingredients and strength it claims to have.
