The Hamilton County Coroner's Office has identified a man police say was shot and killed in a neighbor dispute in Newport.
Damien Serrano, 29, died at the University of Cincinnati Medical Center after an Oct. 23 shooting on East Seventh Street, according to the coroner's office and Newport police. Officers went to the scene around 11:21 p.m. and found Serrano lying on the sidewalk with gunshot wounds.
They arrested 25-year-old Isaac Hamilton a short time later, after Hamilton admitted to shooting Serrano, according to a criminal citation. He's charged with murder in Campbell County District Court.
Hamilton told police that he "became scared" after Serrano struck him in the face, so he fired two rounds, the citation states.
Police also spoke with
several witnesses about what led to the shooting. They said Hamilton told Serrano, "If you hit me, I will shoot you."
Hamilton is currently being held at the Campbell County Detention Center. He was scheduled to appear for an arraignment early on Oct. 26.
Newport police are urging anyone with information about the shooting to call 859-292-3622.
