The Ohio High School Athletic Association has awarded $198,000 in scholarships to recent high school graduates.
Over the summer, the OHSAA worked with its six District Athletic Boards to select 198 graduating seniors for a $1,000 award. Over the past three years, the OHSAA has distributed $598,000 through its college scholarship program.
“These scholar-athletes represent the very best of education-based athletics,” OHSAA Executive Director Doug Ute said. “Our District Athletic Boards, Board of Directors and OHSAA staff collectively share a great deal of pride in the college scholarship program. We congratulate each of the recipients on all their accomplishments and wish them well as they work toward their educational and career goals.”
Athletes
are selected based on a point system. Points are awarded for grade-point averages, class rank, community service activities, varsity letters earned, and individual and team athletic honors. Scholarships are given out proportionally to the number of schools within each district and are selected by special committees from within each of Ohio's six athletic districts. Students who receive athletic scholarships from NCAA Division I or II institutions or are appointed to military academies are not eligible for the award.
Additionally, the OHSAA has sent $1,250 to each member high school to help with items needed by each athletic department. All told, that accounts for over $1 million in funding for Ohio schools. The money comes from the OHSAA's Athletic Enrichment Fund, established in 2023 to help athletic departments cover equipment, transportation, officiating, and other expenses.
