A new accessible residential care home in Burlington is set to open Oct. 1, honoring a vision first championed by longtime Boone County football coach Owen Hauck and his family.
The Yung Family Foundation Advanced Care Home, located at 6125 First Financial Drive, will celebrate its grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at noon, according to a community announcement.
The 5,529-square-foot home includes seven bedrooms and was developed to serve residents with significant disabilities. The project traces its roots to a goal shared by Owen Hauck, his wife Shirley and their son Doug: bringing family member Glen Hauck home from Oakwood State Institution in Somerset.
Glen Hauck lived at the facility from 2003 to 2005.
“Between the years 2003 and
2005, Boone County High School alumni – co-hosted by former National Football League star Shaun Alexander – raised $149,000 to support The Point Arc’s Advanced Care Home,” Judi Gerding, president and founder of The Point Arc, said in the announcement.
“Their efforts were inspired by Coach Hauck,” she continued, “he had a dream to bring Glen home from the Oakwood State Institution.”
Glen Hauck died after the third year of fundraising in 2005 and plans for the home were paused.
“Before Owen’s passing in 2016, we made a promise – to complete the home in honor of him, Glen, Shaun, his former players, and the Goal Line Slam Committee,” Gerding recalled.
Home designed to meet evolving care needs
The project advanced when an anonymous donor provided the 2.37-acre property where the home was built.
The Yung Family Foundation Advanced Care Home will house six residents and provide specialized care, adaptive equipment and accessible living spaces. According to the announcement, the home was designed for individuals whose care needs continue to evolve as people with disabilities live longer lives.
The facility also features six-foot-wide hallways designed to accommodate wheelchairs and includes accessible finishes throughout the home.
Open house planned after ribbon-cutting
Members of the public can tour the home during open house hours from noon to 6 p.m. Oct. 2 and Oct. 3. Additional open house hours are planned from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Oct. 4.
“The six residents will move into the new home between now and Thanksgiving,” Gerding said.
The Yung Family Foundation Advanced Care Home becomes the 19th residential home operated by The Point Arc, a Covington-based nonprofit organization founded 54 years ago.
