CBS color analyst JJ Watt strongly disagreed with a personal-foul call against Cincinnati Bengals defensive lineman Boye Mafe during the second quarter of their NFL Week 7 game against the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium.
"Mafe is flagged for that one," play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz said during the broadcast. "That's big as they were about to get the Ravens off the field."
"This is really interesting: Mafe gets cut by Derrick Henry," Watt said. "What's he supposed to do to avoid that? He got cut, and he's falling down."
"As a defensive player myself, I honestly do not know what you expect me to do in that situation," Watt added.
"(Bengals head coach Zac Taylor) is calling a timeout now," Nantz said. "He is irate over that call."
"If that
block causes him to go into that offensive player, that would absolve him," rules analyst Gene Steratore said. "When he's standing and then he lunges like that, he's going low on his own."
"I get the letter of the law," Watt said. "He gets cut block by the other guy. He gets tripped. … I'm sorry, that's very difficult (for me to understand)."
