George and Amal Clooney are standing by their French community after evacuating their home as wildfires spread across parts of Europe.
The couple said in a letter to the city's mayor that they had left their home in Brignoles, southern France. George Clooney's representative shared the letter with USA TODAY on July 29.
People first reported the evacuation.
"Dear Didier, at this point we have no idea whether our beautiful home makes it through this terrible moment," the letter said, according to People.
"As we evacuate Brignoles, we want to emphasize 2 things," the letter said. "First, we hope you and the people of our city are safe, and second that Amal and I are committed to making sure that whatever happens to our village, we are part of this
community and we'll be part of making it whole. We love Brignoles and our friends who live there."
The Clooneys, who share 9-year-old twins Alexander and Ella, made the French countryside their family's primary home last year. They were granted French citizenship in 2025.
As a heat wave fuels fast-moving wildfires across southern Europe, thousands of people have been forced to evacuate communities in France, Spain and Greece.
In addition to their home in France, the Clooneys also own homes in England, Italy and Kentucky.
The Oscar winner previously said the slower pace of life in the French countryside reminded him of growing up on a farm in Kentucky and offered the kind of childhood he wanted for his children.
"A good portion of my life growing up was on a farm, and as a kid, I hated the whole idea of it," he told Esquire in 2025. "But now, for them, it's like – they're not on their iPads, you know? They have dinner with grown-ups and have to take their dishes in. They have a much better life.
"I felt like they were never going to get a fair shake at life," he continued. "France – they kind of don’t [care] about fame. I don’t want them to be walking around worried about paparazzi. I don’t want them being compared to somebody else’s famous kids."
