Gas prices across Greater Cincinnati have surged, surpassing the state and national averages.
The cost of unleaded regular gasoline is as high as $4.69 per gallon at some Cincinnati gas stations on Friday, Oct. 23, according to gas price tracker GasBuddy.
The Sunoco on 6415 Madison Road in Madisonville is currently selling a gallon for $4.69. Riverside Market at 106 Elm St. in Ludlow, Kentucky, is selling for $4.59 a gallon, while several stations across the area are charging $4.49.
According to AAA Fuel Prices, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gas in the Ohio portion of the Cincinnati metro area was about $4.39 per gallon. The national average is $4.29, while Ohio's average is approximately $4.37.
Cincinnati's average jumped about
42 cents from Thursday and 34 cents from a week ago. However, it is almost 3 cents lower than a month ago. The average is also about $1.34 higher than a year ago, when it was about $3.05.
Per GasBuddy, the average price for a gallon of gas in Cincinnati is $4.42 as of 11:50 a.m. Friday.
Why are gas prices so high?
The main reason gas prices are surging is the Iran war, according to a USA Today report. The war has disrupted transit through the Strait of Hormuz, a Middle Eastern waterway used for transporting a large percentage of the world's petroleum.
Since war erupted in the region, there's an international supply bottleneck that has driven gas prices to historical highs in America. California is at an average of $6.04 a gallon. Prices in states known for cheaper gas, like Texas, are at an average of $3.71 a gallon.
Where is the cheapest gas in Greater Cincinnati?
As of 11:13 a.m., the lowest gas price is $3.57 per gallon and can be found at QuikTrip on 55 Progress Place in Springdale.
The gas station with the second-lowest price is Thorntons at 2568 West North Bend Road in Mount Airy, with gas for $3.85 per gallon, according to Gas Buddy's local map of gas prices.
