USA TODAY's Bob Nightengale wrote that following recent sales of the Los Angeles Angels and San Diego Padres, the Cincinnati Reds could be next.
"Rival owners predict that the Cincinnati Reds could be the next MLB team sold," Nightengale wrote Sept. 8
. "Certainly, Bob Castellini will make a cool profit if he does put them on the block, purchasing the franchise for $270 million in 2006. It's now worth about $1.6 billion."Following a February vote by MLB owners, ownership of the Reds was transferred from Bob Castellini to his son, Phil Castellini, who retained his titles as president and chief executive officer of the organization.
Bob Castellini, who turns 85 later this month, first became principal owner and chief executive officer of the team
in January 2006. He purchased 70 percent of the club from Carl Lindner Jr. for $270 million.
