On Sunday, Aug. 9, the Cincinnati Open formally announced the renaming of one of its largest courts.
Stadium 3, which sits about 4,000 and is located on the north side of the Lindner Family Tennis Center, has been dedicated to the late Hall-of-Famer Tony Trabert.
Tony Trabert Stadium 3 will host several matches in the upcoming Cincinnati Open, which begins in Mason on Tuesday, Aug. 11.
Trabert, a Cincinnati native, was born in 1930 and grew up in Bond Hill. He was the No. 1 ranked amateur player in the world and won three state titles at Walnut Hills High School while taking tennis lessons at Camargo Country Club
and Cincinnati Tennis Club.
He went on to the University of Cincinnati, where he won the college singles title in 1951 and was runner-up in doubles. That same year, he started at guard for the UC Bearcats basketball team that reached the National Invitation Tournament (NIT).
In 1977, he wasinducted into the UC Athletics Hall of Fame for both sports.
Trabert had one of the most remarkable seasons in tennis history in 1955, when he nearly pulled off a calendar year Grand Slam. That year, Trabert became just the second player at the time to win three Majors in a single season as he conquered at Wimbledon, the U.S. National Championships and the French Open. His only blemish at a Major in 1955 was a semifinal loss in the Australian Open. Overall that season, Trabert won 18 of 23 tournaments and compiled a 106-7 overall record.
Trabert was a 10-time Major winner and was a member of the United States Davis Cup teams from 1951-1955, then later served as team captain from 1976-1980.
Locally, Trabert was a six-time Cincinnati Open champion (then called the Tri-State Tennis Tournament), winning two singles crowns (1951, 1953) and four more in doubles (1949, 1951, 1953, 1955).
Trabert was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame in 1970 and spent nearly three decades as a tennis and golf commentator for CBS.
He passed away in 2021 at the age of 90.
