Raw sewage is flowing into the Whitewater River from a treatment plant in Indiana, according to a press release from Hamilton County Public Health.
The department received an Aug. 19 alert from the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission reporting that an unknown amount of untreated municipal water is being released into the Whitewater River from a wastewater treatment plant located in Connersville, Indiana, roughly 50 miles away from Hamilton County. The discharge is due to recent flooding in the area.
The facility is currently offline and repairs are being planned, but Hamilton County residents should temporarily avoid contact with the Whitewater River and the Great Miami River downstream, both flowing into the Ohio River, due to water quality
concerns.
Swallowing recreational water potentially contaminated with E. coli and Cryptosporidium may cause diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea and vomiting.
