MASON − Arthur Fils' breakout spring was cut short.
After working for over half a year to recover from a back injury, Fils returned to the ATP Tour in 2026 by making the semifinals of the Miami and Madrid Open, his first-ever semis berths at the ATP 1000 level. But his progress at the Italian Open came to a halt when he then injured his hip, forcing him to withdraw from the French Open and achieve results below his expectations.
But instead of moping about what could have been, the 22-year-old Frenchman said that he vowed to remain positive. And a little over three months after his injury in Rome, he won the biggest title of his life at the 2026 Cincinnati Open.
Fils, the ATP's No. 21-ranked player, defeated No. 23-ranked Frances Tiafoe 6-3, 1-6,
6-0 on Sunday, Aug. 23 in the men's singles final of the Cincinnati Open. He was dominant in the first and third sets, overcoming a poor second set and a pro-American crowd rooting heavily in favor of Tiafoe to win the match that lasted an hour and 28 minutes.
Cincinnati is Fils' fifth career title, and his first-ever at the ATP 1000 level. He previously won the ATP 500 Barcelona Open this April.
Fils broke Tiafoe in Tiafoe's opening service game of the first set, as the American helped Fils out with a double fault and two shots that sailed just long. Tiafoe got back into the set by playing more decisive points and better serves after Fils got out to a 3-0 lead, but the Frenchman held on to win the opener 6-3 by winning over 87% of his points on both first and second serve.
Nothing showcased that better than Fils' set-clinching game: where he sent Tiafoe's ball flying following an emphatic cross-court forehand, before firing three consecutive aces to close things out. However, Tiafoe began to neuter the strengths of the Frenchman in the next set.
Tiafoe began set two the way Fils started the first: by breaking to take a 2-0 lead. He overcame Fils' comeback from 0-40 down, forcing Fils to overhit on break point by defending several shots behind the baseline. The American broke Fils again at 5-1, before capturing the second set at 6-1 in the next game, as Fils sent Tiafoe's second serve straight into the net on set point.
Between the second and third sets, Tiafoe received a medical timeout. A trainer appeared to be working on his right leg and back as he laid on the bench. He returned to play, though, getting broken at 2-0 by Fils, who pressured the American with heavy groundstrokes. FIls' lead extended to 4-0 with a break over Tiafoe in the fourth game.
In the final game of the match, Tiafoe saved two championship points. Fils sent an overhead shot behind Tiafoe to force a third, and then won the next exchange to win a perfect 6-0 deciding set. When Tiafoe's final shot went long, Fils dropped his racket and threw his arms up in the air, as the crowd that had been mostly cheering against the Frenchman all match rose in ovation for a new champion.
Tiafoe and Fils will next compete at the 2026 U.S. Open in New York, where they will both be seeded. The main draw of the final Grand Slam of the year begins Aug. 30.
