A week after starter Jaxson Dart suffered a knee injury that will cost him at least the remainder of the regular season, the New York Giants have acquired Minnesota Vikings backup J.J. McCarthy for a Day 3 pick in the 2027 NFL draft.
USA Today reported that Minnesota announced the deal Monday, Sept. 28, a day after starting quarterback Kyler Murray returned to the lineup and helped the Vikings run their record to 3-0. The transaction is pending until McCarthy passes a physical with the Giants.
The trade quells rumors that the Giants were attempting to trade for Cincinnati Bengals backup Joe Flacco, talk that Flacco dismissed last week while talking to the Enquirer's Kelsey Conway.
The Bengals traded for Flacco on Oct. 7 last season. He went on to
start six games and gave the Bengals a chance to make the playoffs. The 41-year-old quarterback completed 251 of 416 passes for 2,479 yards and 15 touchdowns when Burrow was out. Conway reported that, considering Flacco's contract - $6 million for one season that can go up to $9 million with incentives - the Bengals value him highly as insurance for Joe Burrow and are unlikely to trade him.
“In these cases, it’s not up to me,” Flacco said last week. “I’m on the Cincinnati Bengals and because of that, that’s my focus. Being here, doing the things that I need to do to get better each day while I’m here. Make sure I’m absorbing the game plan and all of those things. I get a little bit of a kick out of it, but it’s kind out of my hands."
