The City of Harrison named Lt. Joe Ramsey as its next police chief, tapping a veteran officer with more than two decades of law enforcement experience to lead the department.
Ramsey has served 21 years with the Harrison Police Department and will begin transitioning into the position in September before fully assuming the role in early 2027, according to a community announcement.
City Administrator Kim Downey said Ramsey's experience and leadership made him the city's choice to lead the department.
"Lt. Ramsey is more than capable of leading this department and we are excited to see him excel in the position as a community leader as well," Downey said. "His extensive knowledge, experience and training will serve the citizens of the City of Harrison
well."
Ramsey currently serves as lieutenant of the patrol division and also leads the Hamilton County Police Association's Special Weapons and Tactics Team as field commander, a rank equivalent to colonel.
Regional leadership experience
In his SWAT leadership role, Ramsey oversees a multi-jurisdictional tactical team serving 37 communities and approximately 450,000 residents, according to the announcement.
The city cited Ramsey's command-level experience and operational leadership as key qualifications for the position.
Training and education
Ramsey is a graduate of Northwestern University School of Police Staff and Command, the University of Louisville Southern Police Institute Organizational Management Program and multiple FBI-LEEDA leadership institute courses.
He is also completing a Bachelor of Science degree in criminal justice at the University of Cincinnati.
