LOS ANGELES – Elly De La Cruzhas created so much buzz around Dodger Stadium this week, that local call-in shows are fielding questions about how many years before the Dodgers will acquire him – so much buzz that Dodgers broadcasters invaded the Cincinnati Redsclubhouse to talk to him about his superhuman feats in just the first two games of the series and about his longtime fascination with Shohei Ohtani (spoiler alert: he learned a few Japanese words to use on Shohei but they generally talk in English).
Then De La Cruzdid it again in the series finale.
And made some more franchise history along the way.
When the Reds' two-time All-Star shortstop homered to left-center in the fourth inning of the finale on Wednesday (Sept.9), it marked a career-high
five consecutive games with home runs for De La Cruz.
That's two short of the franchise record set by Joey Votto in 2021.
It also was the shortstop's 26th home run of the season, giving him a new career high and extending his franchise record for a switch-hitter.
Through his first two at-bats in that series finale, De La Cruz was 5-for-10 against the Dodgers in the series with three home runs and a double, and his four RBIs accounted for two-thirds of the Reds scoring in the series.
"He's very special," teammate Eugenio Suárez said. "He's amazing."
