Your local Kroger may look a little different in the coming years.
The Cincinnati-based grocery chain plans to add 110 stores by 2029 and introduce three new formats ranging from 50,000 to 99,000 square feet, it announced during its Oct. 20 investor update.
While Kroger has not yet released floor plans, the company says the formats will put food at the center of the store and offer more meal solutions, reflecting a broader focus on fresh foods and prepared meals.
Here's what's changing and what Kroger says shoppers can expect.
What new Kroger stores will look like
As part of the growth plan, Kroger is developing three refreshed store formats that include:
- A 99,000-square-foot full-scale model for high-volume markets.
- A Flexible 75,000-square-foot core model.
- A Focused 50,000-square-foot model for markets suited to a smaller footprint.
Kroger did not indicate in the investor update where the first stores using the new formats will be built or when they will begin
opening, but the company said it plans to add about 110 stores by 2029. The grocer notes that the formats are designed for "omnichannel fulfillment," meaning stores are intended to support both traditional shopping and online grocery orders.
Why Kroger is redesigning its stores
Kroger says the formats are part of a broader push to focus on its core grocery business while building customer loyalty and growing digital sales.
The company's strategy centers on fresh foods, more meal options and private-label products, the plans to add 110 stores by 2029 and invest $5 billion in customer value.
