The Cincinnati Redscalled up right-hander Julian Aguiar from Triple-A Louisville to piggyback Chase Burns start in the opener of a weekend series against the Chicago Cubs Friday (Sept. 18).
The move was necessitated by the unexpected need to use Brandon Williamson, Burns' planned piggyback partner, for two innings in Thursday's finale of the Reds' series against the Dodgers.
Burns (15-3, 2.80) is on a strict innings limit during this final month of his first full big-league season.
For Aguiar, it's a first big-league appearance since his seven-start MLB debut in 2024, before requiring Tommy John surgery at the end of that season.
Rookie Julian Garcia,
who has been one of the Reds' few success stories since a June 23 debut, was put on the injured list because of bone chips in his elbow.
Garcia, who has earned increasing trust and a place in the Reds' 2027 plans through a strong rookie season (3.13 ERA in 33 appearances), has managed the elbow issue for the past two years, he said.
But after an MRI this week, the club expects to schedule surgery in the coming days to remove the "loose bodies."
