SAN FRANCISCO − If anybody thought Brady Singer might miss a start because of some “weird” soreness near his hip, they haven’t paid much attention to the Cincinnati Reds’ every-fifth-day metronome.
“Obviously, it’s a little bit sore, but I’m not worried about it too much,” said Singer, who jammed the area between his ribs and hip bone sliding on the infield grass trying to make a play during this week’s start against the San Francisco Giants. “We’ll just get some work on it and get back out there.
“I’ll be totally fine to be ready (for the next start).”
Singer, the only member of the Reds’ rotation who hasn’t missed a scheduled start the past two seasons, stayed in the game after the sixth-inning play but exited two batters later at 91 pitches
with dangerous left-hitting Rafael Devers due up.
“It was just a weird feeling,” said Singer, who was looked at briefly by the trainer before staying in the game. “I felt fine throwing a few pitches after that. I’m not worried about it. … All good.”
He played catch the next morning before the Reds’ series finale in San Francisco and appeared to fare well.
Because of the Reds’ scheduled off day this week (Aug. 27), Singer gets an extra day before his next scheduled start on Monday (Aug. 31) at home against the San Diego Padres.
Singer (5-12, 4.72 ERA in 26 starts) is in the final season of club control this year but was pulled off the trade market at the deadline earlier this month and is expected to receive a $23 million qualifying offer from the club for next season.
