Scottie Scheffler tied the TPC Southwind course record Aug. 14 with a scintillating second-round 61 (9-under par) at the FedEx St. Jude Championship.
In doing so, the No. 1 golfer in the world rocketed to the top of the leaderboard in Memphis, sitting at 11-under and holding a three-stroke lead over Sungjae Im.
Scheffler’s masterful round started with five straight birdies and 11 overall. It also included a pair of bogeys (one on the front nine and one on the back).
The 30-year-old Texan shot out of the gate on fire, ripping off six birdies in his first seven holes and seven of the first 10. After making par on No. 11, and bogeying No. 12 (after finding the water off the tee), he settled back into a groove, making birdies on three of the last four
holes. His birdie putt on 18 came up just eight inches short.
Scheffler’s 61 is the fifth time a professional golfer has hit that mark since the course opened in 1989. Justin Rose accomplished the feat in 2023. Tom Lewis did it in 2020, while Bob Estes did it in 2001. Jay Delsing was the first to card a 61 at TPC Southwind, doing so in 1993 (when it was a par-71 course).
