Time is running out for Shelby County voters to register to cast their ballots ahead of November's Election Day.
Residents must register to vote by Oct. 5 to be able to participate in the Nov. 3 election, which has local, state and federal races on the ballot — including the highly controversial three recently gerrymandered congressional seats representing Memphis.
Here's a quick rundown of what to know.
How to register to vote
Visit the Shelby County Election Commission's website to register online or by mail, or update your registration.
If registering by mail, applications must be postmarked or received no later than Oct. 4 to meet the deadline.
Check your voter status, change
your address or find your polling location at shelbyvote.com.
Who can register to vote
To be eligible to vote in Shelby County:
- You must be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years old on or before Election Day, and a resident of Shelby County;
- You must not have been convicted of a felony (or if you have, you must have had your voting rights restored); and
- You must have a federally or state-issued photo ID, such as a driver's license or U.S. passport (IDs can be current or expired, and a Real ID is not required to vote).

The Shelby County Election Commission is holding a voter registration drive Sept. 28 to help residents who may need it. You can visit either of the commission's offices to register in person until 6:30 p.m.

Key dates to know
- Deadline to register to vote: Oct. 5
- Early voting period: Oct. 14 to 29 (residents can vote at any of the designated early voting locations)
- Deadline to request an absentee ballot: Oct. 24 (for residents who cannot vote in-person)
- Election day: Nov. 3
