Stanley Joseph Smith of Hot Springs Village, Ark., who helped create St. Benedict at Auburndale School in Memphis, died Sunday of Parkinson Disease in Hot Springs Village. He was 72. In 1966, his wife Mary Alice, who died in 1988, founded The Auburndale School System in Cordova. Mr. Smith became the college preparatory schools business manager. Two decades later, in 1988, the Smiths sold the school to the Catholic Diocese of Memphis. It became St. Benedict at Auburndale School. Earlier this year, the school honored Mr. Smith with a "Wings of an Eagle" award for his vital role in its history.

More low and moderate income families in the Memphis area will qualify for federally subsidized mortgage interest payments
on new homes as a result of a policy change announced last week by Carla Hills, secretary of the Department of Housing and Urban Development. Ernest Waller, director of the Memphis insuring office of HUD, said guideline changes affecting those who qualify for the revised FHA 235 program will broaden the scope of the program.
75 years ago — 1951
Only nine of 20 bus routes maintained by the Memphis Street Railway Co. operate at a profit, Col. Roane Waring, president of the company, yesterday told the luncheon meeting of the Civitan Club at the Peabody. Three of the lines break about even. The nine lines which carry the load were listed by Colonel Waring as the Fairgrounds, Normal-Summer, Walker, No. 7 Crosstown (Cleveland), Chelsea-Florida, Lauderdale, Lane-Elmwood, Thomas Forest-Hill and North Second-DeSoto. Listed as breaking about even were the Park-Jackson, Poplar-Peabody-Central-High Point Terrace and Glenview Lines.
100 years ago — 1926
Memphis Junior Safety Council will be the subject of a discussion by Sergt. J.L. Penick, police department attache of the Memphis Chamber of Commerce Safety Division, at the fifteenth annual safety congress to be held in Detroit, Oct. 25 to 29. The School Safety and Junior Safety Council session will take place on the last day of the congress at the Statler Hotel.
