Tennessee highway officials have selected two possible paths on either side of U.S. 51 as the route for Interstate 69 between Dyersburg and Memphis. The state Department of Transportation will hold four meetings next week to answer questions and get citizen reaction to routes carved out of a 10-mile-wide corridor.
50 years ago — 1976
Seals & Crofts are newcomers to the music lineup of this year's Mid-South Fair, being added after an illness forced the Beach Boys to bow out, but the two pop singers certainly aren't newcomers to the city itself. The duo, which first rose to national attention in the early '70s with hits like "Summer Breeze," "Hummingbird," "Diamond Girl" and "We May Never Pass This Way Again," played two concerts
in Memphis in 1973 within 4½ months. Then in July of '75, they came into town on the strength of a No.1 record, "I'll Play for You" and found themselves playing for a crowd estimated at 21,000. Seals & Crofts' appearance as part of the fair will be in the Mid-South Coliseum Friday.
75 years ago — 1951
CHICAGO ‒ William H. Ruffin, Durham, N.C., president of the National Association of Manufacturers, Tuesday told the National Hardwood Lumber Association that the hope of America's survival lies in the nation's productive capacity. Mr. Ruffin was addressing the association's 54th annual meeting, presided over by Lee Robinson, Mobile, Ala., president, and John W. McClure, manager.
100 years ago — 1926
Striking a snag at Tamm's Landing, Tenn., 150 miles above Memphis, yesterday morning, the steamer DeSoto sank. She is believed to be a total loss to her owners, the Valley Line Steamers. The boat was returning from Caruthersville to Memphis and was due in port yesterday afternoon, carrying no freight. The crew was saved and a small amount of cotton seed was carried to shore. Nathan Stansell, diver, of Baton Rouge, La., left Memphis yesterday on his way to the scene of the sinking and will make an attempt to raise the boat, officials of the company stated yesterday.
