St. George Greek Orthodox Church will hold its 40th Greekfest Saturday on the church grounds at 6984 U.S. 70 in Bartlett. Greek lunches and dinners will be available and a band will play Greek music, and live performances will be held.

Industrial Strength Dixieland, a group of Memphis State students that played a regular role in Libertyland's musical presentations this summer, will perform in a free concert this evening at Audubon Square Condominiums.

A Memphis Naval Air Reserve "Week-end Warrior" squadron, VS-791, will take to the air this morning headed for the Naval Air Station at New Orleans for an annual two-week training cruise. An anti-submarine squadron, VS-791 consists of more than
14 officers and 57 enlisted men from Memphis and the Mid-South. Its commanding officer is Lieut. Comdr. C.S. Lee of Indianola, Miss. The squadron is scheduled to begin leaving the Memphis Naval Air Station at Millington aboard 13 Navy torpedo bombers, two SNR utility planes and four Navy transport planes.
100 years ago — 1926
EUPORA, Miss. ‒ Sam Cooke died at his home in Walthall, Miss., last night. Arrangements for the funeral have not been completed yet, but he will be buried at Bethel, a church between Slate Springs, Miss., and Sabougla, Miss. He was born and raised at Slate Springs, a small village in the southern part of Calhoun County, and was in his eighty-fifth year.
